Welcome to Stanhope. A safe neighborhood. A place for families.
William Wooler is a family man, on the surface. But he’s been having an affair, an affair that ended horribly this afternoon at a motel up the road. So when he returns to his house, devastated and angry, to find his difficult nine-year-old daughter, Avery, unexpectedly home from school, William loses his temper.
Hours later, Avery’s family declares her missing.
Suddenly Stanhope doesn’t feel so safe. And William isn’t the only one on his street who’s hiding a lie. As witnesses come forward with information that may or may not be true, Avery's neighbors become increasingly unhinged.
Who took Avery Wooler?
Nothing will prepare you for the truth.

Delivering the captivating twists always present in Lapena's thrillers, January LaVoy is the perfect narrator to keep listeners guessing. Dr. William Wooler checks all the boxes for "perfect family man": good job, beautiful wife and children, perfect home. However, things aren't what they seem. The same day that William's mistress ends their affair, he loses his temper with his 9-year-old daughter, Alice. A few hours later, his wife calls to tell him Alice is missing. LaVoy's narration perfectly matches the fast-paced plot and captures a wide range of family members and neighbors. She depicts the bewilderment and fear of a family and neighborhood in chaos as people turn on one another and secrets are revealed. A must-listen! K.S.M. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

When nine-year-old Avery Wooler goes missing, police launch an exhaustive investigation throughout her picturesque suburban neighborhood. Hoping to find just one lead that will bring the child home safely, they uncover so much envy, infidelity, and abuse behind each idyllic door that they begin to wonder if there is anyone who isn't a suspect. Was it her father, William, with his volatile, violent tendencies? Or the scorned husband of William's lover, seeking revenge for the shame their affair has wrought? Or maybe the odd boy down the street, quiet and withdrawn with everyone except Avery. Though motives abound, the startling truth will leave listeners in shock. Lapena (Not a Happy Family) crafts unsettling psychological suspense teeming with menace and malevolence. Narrator January LaVoy expertly evokes each flawed character and their frenzied thoughts. Her performance of the fast-paced, plot-driven narrative is eerie and engrossing. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking disturbing domestic suspense with tension and twists that are seemingly endless and utterly engrossing. Recommended for fans of Zoje Stage, Ashley Audrain, and Gillian Flynn.--Lauren Hackert
